Case Study - Crisps - The Flavouring System in Snack Food HandlingBetter Tasting Snack Foods were seeking an accurate method of adding various flavourings to their entire snack food range. Their customers include UK supermarkets as well as own branded products within the outdoor leisure sector. Their product range comprises over 20 lines. Their tried and tested method of flavouring addition involved a complex manual process which had been successful for many years. Cox & Plant designed an all purpose flavouring system which worked in harmony with Better Tasting Snack Foods existing lines. Better Tasting Snack Foods had invested significant amounts into specialised batch fryers and it was essential that the Cox & Plant flavouring system was designed to incorporate non standard food processing machinery, as well as carefully handling the delicate products. Cox and Plant were able to assist by better design and technology, combined with the latest snack food handling knowledge. A feedback system; a closed loop on the controller which varied the frequency according to the amount of product already distributed, was also introduced to ensure the line was free from starvation and was not subject to over filling and subsequent product damage. Cox and Plant managed to overcome the challenge of processing a delicate product whilst delivering a consistent flavour. Better Tasting Snack Foods have gained consistent product quality, increased orders from existing customers, as well as new orders from new customers. This growth is generating a need for larger premises - where Cox & Plant will be supplying all the new food processing plant machinery.

This is what we think at Cox & Plant:If you buy cheap-you buy twice! It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money-that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot-it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better. JOHN RUSKIN 1819-1900 |
